Selecting the Correct Coating for Every Type of Pool Surface

It is very important, regardless of coating type, to keep the following in mind. Pool resurfacing, although not difficult, requires exact attention to detail in order to achieve the desired results. Careless surface preparation or application could ultimately cause unsatisfactory performance. Considering the environment in which our coatings are used, and the life span they are expected to produce, strict adherence to these preparation and application techniques is understandable. Through years of research regarding the use of our products. This information is available through our Technical Bulletins. Contact your Olympic supplier or Kelley Technical Coatings with your questions and the appropriate bulletin(s) will be given to you.

OLYMPIC POOL COATINGS

WATER-BASE

HYDROLON, is a water base acrylic enamel designed for fast, easy application on bare concrete or plaster and over old rubber base finishes. The unique properties of HYDROLON make it perfect for seasonal commercial application or for use in indoor facilities.

CHLORINATED RUBBER

PARALON 2, our most popular, gives a high quality, satin finish equal or superior to similar coatings available today. Life expectancy is generally two seasons.

EXCELLON, our bright colors rubber base enamel, dries to a high-gloss finish and yields an expected three to four seasons of performance.

SYNTHETIC RUBBER

OPTILON, an economical synthetic rubber base swimming pool finish formulated with a quality styrene acrylate polymer resin. OPTILON will meet all of the quality performance expectations of chlorinated rubber base coatings. OPTILON will provide a hard durable finish that protects against harsh chemicals, resists algae, and beautifies the pool surface.

These coatings can be used on plaster, old bare, sandblasted, or new cured concrete. Also, on pools coated previously with a chlorinated rubber base finish. For more information and detailed application guidelines for PARALON 2 and EXCELLON, please request Bulletin #123. For information on OPTILON, please request Bulletin #121.

EPOXY

Kelley Technical Coatings also offers two epoxy pool paints.

POXOLON dries to a smooth, bright ceramic-like finish. Because it is non-porous, this coating repels algae growth and resists staining. Two coats are required over primer, and 3-6 days (depending on temperature) is recommended before filling the pool. Life expectancy is generally four to six years.

ZERON is a heavier epoxy formula, requiring only one coat over primer. ZERON is the best pool coating available today, with up to eight years of life expected.

These epoxy coatings can be used on any type pool surface after proper preparation. For more information and detailed application guidelines for POXOLON and ZERON, please request Bulletin #105 from your Olympic dealer or write Kelley Technical Coatings.

EPOXY PRIMERS

Before painting a bare surface with an epoxy pool coating, priming with an epoxy primer is required to provide adequate adhesion capacity. Kelley Technical Coatings manufacturers five types of epoxy primer.

POXOPRIME II is the prime coat for smooth new and old bare concrete or plaster. It is never used over other finishes or on metal or fiberglass surfaces--only bare plaster and concrete.

GUNZITE performs the same function only it is heavier to conceal surface texture. This primer would be used as a filler for newly gunited surfaces, or to smooth up a rough textured interior of concrete, plaster, or fiberglass. So, POXOPRIME II for smoother surfaces, and GUNZITE for extra porous or rough surfaces. For further information and detailed application guidelines, secure from your supplier Special Bulletin #116 for POXOPRIME II and/or #118 for GUNZITE. For detailed surface preparation information (before applying primer) please request Special Bulletin #141 from your Olympic Supplier or write Kelley Technical Coatings. Additionally, BONDERITE - for bare aluminum surfaces, #219 STEEL PRIMER - for bare non-galvanized steel, and #220 GALVANIZED STEEL PRIMER - for bare galvanized steel, are manufactured by Kelley Technical Coatings.
